Nicki Minaj Says Cardi B “Built Her Career Off Sympathy & Payola”

The two rappers almost came to blows on Friday.

Over the weekend, Nicki Minaj and Cardi B got into a scuffle at a Harpers Bazaar event during New York Fashion Week. Cardi immediately sounded off with a note on Instagram, and today Nicki fired back on the latest episode of Queen Radio.

After criticizing the Bronx rapper for picking a fight during a fashion event, Nicki went on to deny Cardi’s claims about dissing her parenting skills. Soon after, she attacked Cardi for building “her career of sympathy and payola,” referencing the illegal practice of bribing broadcasters to play an artist’s songs. “I never had to fuck a DJ to play my songs,” she said. Nicki also asked if Cardi knows “what it’s like to sit in your rooms for hours writing raps?” This is likely a reference to Cardi’s use of co-writers on songs like “Be Careful.”

The latter line of criticism echoes lyrics Nicki rapped on her recent track “Ganja Burns”:

Unlike a lot of these hoes whether wack or lit
At least I can say I wrote every rap I spit
Put my blood, sweat and tears in perfecting my craft

Speaking to The Blast, an unnamed member of Cardi’s management team said that payola accusations are “absolutely false."

The two artists have had issues since at least last year. After both rappers appeared together on Migos“Motorsport,” different stories emerged about how the song came together. Rumors emerged that Nicki didn’t know Cardi would be on the song, which she emphatically denied. However, she did say back in April that Cardi had never shown her “genuine love,“ saying, "the first interview she did, it just hurt me because she looked so aggravated and angry and the only thing she kept saying was, ‘Oh, I didn’t hear that verse, I didn’t hear that verse. She changed her verse.’”

She also weighed in on Meek Mill and Drake’s recent reunion. “I’m very happy. I know for a fucking fact that it had been weighing heavily on both of these niggas. So when I step back as a human being I am happy and proud. Now, I wouldn’t be lying if Drake and I didn’t have a whole conversation about this,” she said. “It’s something that until it’s dealt with, it feels horrible. It feels like it’s eating away at you. So I am happy for them. And seeing that right after this fucking brawl at the biggest party of fashion week? I just felt so embarrassed.”
