The unexpected collaboration is set to appear on Lavigne’s comeback album, ‘Head Above Water.’

Early 2000s pop icon Avril Lavigne is readying her comeback album, Head Above Water, for release this Friday, and today she linked up with an unexpected collaborator: Nicki Minaj. The rapper contributes a verse to Lavigne’s “Dumb Blonde,” produced by Mitch Allen. As Minaj explained, she’s been a fan of Lavigne’s music since before she was famous.

On the track, Lavigne sings about overcoming stereotypes and adversity:

I ain’t no dumb blonde
I ain’t no stupid Barbie doll
I got my game on
You gon' watch me, watch me, watch me prove you wrong

Meanwhile, Minaj spits about her influence and drops a reference to her Remy Ma diss track, “No Frauds”:

All the hatin' you was doin' got the Barbie poppin'
Now all of ‘em wanna be a Barbie, I’m watchin’
But you never gon' stop me, never gon' top me
Millions on millions, they never gon' dock me
I am the prototype, the pinkprint
And no, I don’t want no frauds, wink, wink

Lavigne explained the inspiration behind the track on Twitter. “We wrote Dumb Blonde as an anthem for anyone who has been stereotyped or talked down to,” she said. “Keep your confidence up and don’t let anyone tell you how to be.”

Head Above Water is set to be Lavigne’s first album since the release of her self-titled project in 2013.
